A film about a current topic, where significant social, political, artistic and moral problems are traced back to the family situation. Simply put: a politically loaded family drama that won’t bore you for even a second.

The famous actress Derya and her husband Aziz, a drama professor, lead a happy life together with their daughter in Ankara. Up until an incident during the premiere of their new stage play makes them experience the arbitrariness of the Turkish state. They are forced to give up their jobs and leave their house. They have to move in with Aziz’s mother in Istanbul and start building a new life. Derya is pragmatic about it, but Aziz remains idealistic.

The acting performances in this film are sublime. The choice to portray Berlin as Ankara and Hamburg as Istanbul works surprisingly well. This film is more than worth watching, and treats the current socio-political themes, such as artistic freedom versus political repression, an authoritarian political system versus ideals, family versus external pressure. Through an exciting thriller, the director of “Das Lehrerzimmer” displays the moral complexity of an authoritarian system and the dynamic of a family under great stress. A relevant film that gives you food for thought about what is right and what is wrong.
