“Bidad” is a powerful, courageous and very relevant film from Iran. It is a powerful, secretly made, story of resistance, at least partly thanks to Sarvin Zabetian’s exquisite acting performance.

Seti, a young woman, lives with her alcoholic mother. Singing is her passion but she can only do that as a background singer in a choir. However, Seti wants a role more in the forefront, but singing in public is forbidden to women in Iran. “Why do we have a voice if no one is allowed to hear it?” is Seti’s question that starts everything…

“Bidad” is an impressive film. Raw, urgent and uncomfortable. An emotionally loaded statement about freedom and women’s resistance, and a politically loaded drama that through music and song shines a light on the oppression of women in Iran. It has a beautiful leading role for Sarvin Zabetian as Seti. Her body language and movements convey both inner power as well as vulnerability.
