A tense road movie set in Saudi-Arabia, where grandmother and granddaughter search frantically for the missing Sarah. A journey filled with faith, family ties and freedom.

Strict grandmother Sitti travels to Mekka with her grandchildren Janna and Sarah. When Sarah suddenly disappears, Sitty and Janna embark on a search helped by a taxi driver. They have to find her before their conservative father catches wind of the disappearance. Their search not only provides the necessary tension, but also moments where Janna grows up.

“Hijra” is a nuanced and visually powerful film that transforms a pilgrimage into a moving search for identity and freedom. The film sheds a subtle light on the social tensions and the changing social position of women in Saudi-Arabia. A well balanced mixture of coming-of-age and road movie.

"In her second outing as a feature-length filmmaker, Saudi Arabian director Shahad Ameen goes bolder and deeper with 'Hijra', a quietly devastating film that is as honest as it is poetic, employing symbolism to address urgent social, religious and cultural dilemmas in present-day Saudi Arabia." - Mina Takla, AwardsWatch
