“Ky Nam Inn” is made with great visual style and brings to life a subtle love story at a decisive point in Vietnamese history. Comparisons with “In the Mood for Love” are obvious.

It’s in the mid eighties in Vietnam. Khang is a young translator who moves to Saigon. There he meets Ky Nam, a widow who earns her living as a chef. At first she is distant and as a defence mechanism she acts as if she was hard-hearted. Despite at first seeming two opposites, Khang and Ky Nam quickly become emotionally entangled with each other.

The lyrical and gentle dialogues refer generously to great literature and music, forming a beautiful addition to the imagery, compellingly captured on 35 mm. Because of the slow pacing and the length of 140 minutes, it is a film for connoisseurs. But those who allow themselves to be carried away in the melancholy and sweetness of the story and art direction will have an extraordinary experience.
