Brazil in the nineteen seventies. Hoping to escape his past, Marcelo, a respected professor, travels to Recife. During Carnival week he discovers that the city is in fact not the safe haven he had hoped for. Corruption runs rampant, from the local police chief to the director of the state archive where he goes to look for his mother’s official identity card.
An impressively constructed, layered political thriller that transcends genre boundaries, innovatively mixing different film styles. The close-ups, the colours, the detailed sets, a fever dreamlike atmosphere, the art direction, the music, the editing… everything is just right in this film that stimulates all the senses.
