‘Girl’ tells a harrowing story in a dreamy, almost fairy-tale like manner, intensified by its magical soundtrack.

Grace and her daughter Ama live in a tiny apartment in Glasgow. Grace worries too much and ignores the well-intentioned help of the neighbours, the kind social worker and the landlord. She is convinced that she can’t trust anyone. Ama on the other hand is curious and makes friends. Grace will have to face her traumas if she wants a better life for her daughter.

This intense film is captured in stunning images. Looks speak louder than words and the music sways gently. ‘Girl’ is a convincing showpiece for both the film maker and the actors. The film tells a subtle story about migration from a refreshing perspective. ‘Girl’ becomes an empathic hug for an adolescent who deserves a better childhood and an adult who has seen too much.
