This gripping film is based on a true story. The gruesome series of murders of female sex workers in Iran remain a sensitive topic up until this day.

A brave journalist heads for an infamous suburb of the holy city Mashhad to investigate a series of femicides. Quickly she draws the conclusion that the local authorities are in no hurry to solve the cases, because the victims turn out to be female sex workers. The murders are supposedly committed by one single man who wants to rid the city of its sins.

‘Holy Spider’ is an exciting crime thriller on the one hand and a confronting story about misogyny in Iran on the other. The dark, grim atmosphere is crucial to achieve the effect of omnipresent fear. Scenes in which the journalist is hindered by local authorities or the killer is praised by the people, throw the viewer into harsh reality.
