During the seasonal harvest in a fig orchard, young girls and boys develop new feelings. They flirt, discuss and unsuccessfully try to understand each other.

Every day, several generations of women head for the orchard to pick figs. They exchange intimate feelings and animated words under the scorching Tunisian sun. Emotions especially run high in the conversations with their male co-workers. Along the vulnerable fig branches, it becomes clear that not everyone holds the same views on romance and marriage.

‘Under the Fig Trees’ delivers an animated image of young Tunisian workers in the prime of their lives. The story meanders between intimacy and jealousy, solidarity and selfishness. The striking contrast between religion and tradition on the one hand and social media on the other, reveals a field of tension that many young girls struggle with today. The film is charming, light and enriching.
