Malek Bensmaïl is an Algerian director and member of the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences. At the beginning of his career he made experimental documentaries, such as Territoire(s) (1996), where he combined video art with documentary imagery. Additionally, he directed Des vacances, malgré tout (2001) and Aliénations (2004). One thing that all his films have in common is that his focus is always on the history of Algeria, and on the search for a tender and humane perspective.
