Eva Sadek, a Palestine activist, takes you on a personal family story. A symbolic box, filled with memories, artefacts and, stories brings her family’s history – from her family’s uprooting from Palestina in 1948 to the generations that followed – to life. The box is a symbol of the things that we pass on, preserve and remember.
Eva welcomes you to reflect on what touches you: Which objects appeal to you, which memories stick with you and why? Meanwhile she shares her personal search for identity, community and meaning as a Palestinian, born in Belgium. What does it mean to be a Palestinian in the diaspora? And how do you carry on that story?
After Eva’s testimony you can get to work yourself, as a participant or a family, in this workshop suited from 6 years old onwards. You make your own box, capturing what you think is essential to pass on to future generations. This could be through drawings, words, symbols or small artefacts. This creates room for mutual dialogue, reflection and connection between parents, children and participants.
With this workshop Eva does not only intend to share her story, but also to urge people to think: What do you want to leave behind? Which memories are essential? What kind of world do I want to pass on?
The central message is one that sticks with you: memories, identity and community live on in what we choose to pass on.
