In “Shape of Momo”, Bishnu returns to her mountain village, where her family and community confront her with patriarchal traditions. A modest film about resistance against imposed orders.

32-year-old Bishnu returns from Delhi to her village in the Himalaya, where she is going to live with her mother, grandmother and pregnant sister. She becomes friends with the architect Gyan, who suggests she build a guest house. Her mother sees this as the opportunity to at last marry her off. But the pressure of marrying clashes directly with Bishnu’s desire for independence.

“Shape of Momo” is a layered tale that impressively avoids clichés about the clash between city and tradition. Bishnu is an interesting, fallible character: her struggle in her native village in Sikkim is  bold, but it’s coloured by privilege and moral blind spots. Precisely this human imperfection and the modest pacing make this portrait of three generations of women impressively authentic.
