Cinematographically, the story is attractive in its modesty. In contrast to many films about Africa, “Promised Sky” avoids unnecessarily bright colours. What is more, it is a memorable and emotionally powerful film.

Three women from the Ivory Coast live in Tunis: Marie, a preacher and former journalist; Naney, a young mother with no papers and Jolie, an ambitious student. When they take four-year-old Kenza, who has survived a shipwreck, into their care, their lives are turned upside down. The women face huge social pressure, racism, exclusion and violence

What makes this film beautiful is that it does not fall into stereotypes and black and white narratives. There is a lot of nuance in the way how characters are developed, and the way the story unfolds. What is also interesting is the role of religion in this community. The background of the woman director in making documentaries is evident in this film.
