Algiers, 1938. Meursault, een eerder stille man van begin dertig, woont de begrafenis van zijn moeder bij zonder een traan te laten. De volgende dag begint hij een vrijblijvende affaire met Marie, een collega. Zijn dagelijkse leven wordt echter al snel verstoord door zijn buurman en dan vindt er op een bloedhete dag een tragische gebeurtenis plaats. De film is gebaseerd op de wereldberoemde roman ‘L’Étranger’ van Albert Camus. De setting van de film blijft trouw aan het boek: Algerije, eind jaren 1930 in de periode van de Franse koloniale overheersing. François Ozon laat zien hoe je een literair werk overtuigend kan verfilmen met aandacht voor sfeer, personages en morele complexiteit.
