De Marokkaanse filmmaker Asmae el Moudir wil weten waarom ze maar één foto uit haar jeugd heeft. Wanneer haar familie weigert vragen over het verleden te beantwoorden, vindt ze een andere oplossing. In miniatuur bouwt ze de wijk na waarin ze opgroeide. Ze vraagt haar familie om te vertellen over hun alledaagse leven. Langzaam begint ze lagen van bedrog en opzettelijk vergeten, te ontrafelen.

‘The Mother of All Lies’ is een documentaire vol verbeelding en creativiteit, maar tegelijk moedig en gedurfd. Met miniaturen en poppetjes wordt een familieverleden gereconstrueerd. Het resultaat is een speelse en ontroerende studie van wreedheden, die deels door de staat worden verdoezeld. Het is een originele en sfeervolle film, soms pijnlijk en tragisch, met een grote vertelvaardigheid die bij momenten betovert.
