When Morocco is thrown into turmoil by a mysterious entity, Itto—who is several months pregnant—must embark on a journey through the mountains. In her search for her husband, she discovers herself and finds answers she didn’t even know she was looking for.

Itto, a young woman from a humble background, is slowly but surely adapting to the privileged lifestyle of her wealthy in-laws. But when supernatural events plunge Morocco into a strange state of emergency, she becomes separated from her husband. Alone, very pregnant, and searching for her husband, she discovers herself and her personal liberation.

“Animalia” challenges you to reflect on the meaning of life and the role of the unknown. The film showcases the beauty and diversity of Morocco, as well as the social and cultural tensions within the country. Director Sofia Alaoui presents a female perspective on a changing world, in which the main character slowly but surely finds her own voice and place.
