All My Sisters

Playful homemade videos show how little girls in Iran gradually have to trade in their playfulness for obedience to imposed rules. This documentary lovingly restores autonomy to those same women.

Film maker Massoud Bakshi shows his two nieces, Mahya and Zahra, the images he made of them in 2007. As little girls they seem to be carelessly dancing through life. However, slowly but surely the restrictions imposed by the Iranian government find their way into the traditional family. The sisters grow up to be committed young women, who together develop a critical voice for women’s rights in Iran.

Homemade video’s show how the sisters seem to lose this autonomy. But by looking at the images through their own eyes – literally – and focussing on their own opinions, they take back control of their lives. They decide how people see them and provide an alternative perspective on women in Iran. A political yet deeply personal documentary, which has been worked on for many years, but has never lost its relevance.

"On top of being a deeply personal family story and a wider political tale tied to the historical “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests in Iran in 2022, 'All My Sisters' is a searing look into the ethics of documentary." - Rafa Sales Ross, Variety
