Irka and Tolik live in the Donetsk region right by the Russian border. Their house is in the middle of a disputed area. Tensions in their village flare high when a Malaysia Airlines passenger flight is mercilessly shot down by pro-Russian troops. Instead of fleeing, Irka, her husband and her brother try to rebuild their bombed house.

‘Klondike’ is a painfully relevant film about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The scenario is peppered with whiffs of dark humour. Director Maryna Er Gorbach conveys the war from within and places the personal setbacks of regular citizens against the backdrop of an international catastrophe. At the heart of the film is one of the darkest days in aviation history: the crash of Flight 17 of Malaysia Airlines.
