‘Charcoal’ is a dry satire and compellingly sketches a society full of contradictions. Religion, faith, life and death intertwine and cause moral dilemmas

Irene and Jairo live in the Brazilian countryside with their son Jean. They take care of Irene’s bed-ridden father and try to make ends meet with their small charcoal business. Their life drastically changes when a dodgy nurse suggests an evil plan: to kill her sick father and shelter a fugitive Argentinian drug lord. This surreal plot twist has big consequences.

‘Charcoal’ is a contagious black comedy with beautiful art direction. Everything in the film feels exaggerated: the décor, the camera work, the acting, the editing, the lighting and – the icing on the cake – the storyline. All this makes this film very enjoyable. Strong debut feature film by a female director.

An original thriller that also has a caustic undercurrent with some necessary dark humour.
