‘Banu’ is a universal story about a mother’s battle for her child and the desperate search for an escape from domestic violence.

When Banu wants to divorce her husband Javid, he demands full custody of their son. Desperately she starts looking for people who want to testify in her favour in court, but her endeavour doesn’t run very smoothly. The counterparty’s family is powerful and everybody fears retaliation. Even her own mother sides with Javid and demands her to return to her husband. But Banu doesn’t give up.

Tahmina Rafaella is both the director and the leading actress, a part she plays fantastically and intriguingly. The film is tight and introvert, in spite of the many dramatic moments. On top of that, ‘Banu’ has a documentary character, due to the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia slumbering in the background. The loss of a son emphasises the pointlessness of war.

An intimate, brave drama.
