This Senegalese film combines stories and traditions, soap shows and tragedies in order to make difficult themes such as female oppression and liberation as universal as possible.

Twin sisters Awa and Adama live with their ill grandmother. Awa is smart and stands out at school. Adama sells trinkets in the streets and wants to go to Europe. When their grandma dies, they end up with their uncle Atoumane. He wants to marry their cousin Fatou, but she doesn’t have feelings for the older man. When Fatou rejects him, Atoumane becomes angry and that opens the floodgates.

In a quirky, original way, ‘Xalé’ expresses the resistance against a forced marriage. The story is beautifully accompanied by an African choir that provides the events of comments. The film is a poetic portrait of a growing female self-consciousness in Africa.
