Together with Bib van Turnhout, we organise a special screening of “The Virgin of the Quarry Lake”, a film based on the work of Argentine writer Mariana Enriquez.

With a panel discussion before the screening, we explore how the film deals with themes such as coming of age within the horror genre, how the characters find their way within the social context of Argentina, the subtle use of magic realism to connect the natural with the supernatural and the powerful female gaze that pierces through the narrative. These perspectives offer valuable context before watching the film and encourage you to reflect on how genres, culture and gender influence each other in the stories we watch and read.

The panel discussion is a unique opportunity to take some more time to think about the themes of the film, the different layers of the characters and the way in which Mariana Enriquez’s literary world comes to life on the big screen.

Moderator: Melissa Giardina

Panel members: Roderik Six, Benny Haesebrouck and Nada Lie

1:30PM start panel discussion
