A Taiwanese film that was partly written by Sean Baker (director of “Anora” and winner of the Palme d’Or in 2024), and similar to “The Florida Project”. The female Taiwanese director has worked together with Baker since 2004, and in turn has also helped with writing his films.

Shu-Fen, a single mum, returns from the countryside to Taipei. She has two daughters: twenty one-year-old rebellious I-Ann and five-year-old I-Jing. Shu-Fen is struggling financially. Her ex-husband can’t support her and she also gets little help from her parents. To make ends meet, she opens a food stall in a lively night market.

A tragicomedy in a poetic style about women from different generations fighting against archaic traditions and prejudices. Thanks to the subtle mixture of drama and humour, and the excellent, natural performances, the film is easily digestible. The film was entirely recorded with an iPhone, allowing the film maker to record quickly and efficiently in the busy night market, resulting in a raw, sharp and intimate style.
