Yan Shuo grows up with his alcoholic father. After an incident at school, his fellow student Wei invites him to his home. His parents are middle class and they live very comfortably. Unlike Wei, Yan Shuo is a good student, and he manoeuvres himself into the family. Slowly but surely he becomes an informal member of the family; for Wei’s parents he is the son of their dreams.
Despite not being a genre film, it does display characteristics of a thriller because the director manages to show tensions between the different family members, with past traumas slowly resurfacing. He does this by using the soundtrack, sounds and moments of silence in clever, beautiful and elegant compositions.
