During their final year at school, a group of Singaporean girls forms an intimate friendship. Apart from the joys of youth, they are also preparing themselves for their approaching future.

Sixteen-year-old Choo Xin Yu newly arrives at a strict girls school in Singapore. Like any teenager she doesn’t want to conform to the rules. That’s why, together with three friends, she sets up a secret society. Hunting ghosts and recording everything they see on an old camcorder, become the foundation of an intimate friendship.

In this gentle story the young cast portray teenage schoolgirls in an extremely authentic way. The characters form a convincing women’s collective, that is full of youthful joie de vivre and also humour. Additionally, the film seamlessly manages to connect serious topics and the concerns of the young girls. Because amongst the mischief it emerges that their future is at stake – and how do you, as a sixteen year old, deal with something as scary as that?

"'Amoeba'‘s setting and exploration provide the primary interest in Tan’s debut feature, which deals explicitly with the cosmopolitan identity of Singapore, and what it means to the young people in the city-state." - Ankit Jhunjhunwala, The Film Stage
