The impressive cinematography throws the audience into the dusty reality of the steppe. The impressive widescreen shots show the vulnerability of people in the endless sandy plains.

Gulphire is the head of the Nogai community in Dagestan, both at home and at work she takes care of the lives of her men and leads a work force that combats the advancing desert. Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine has broken out and Putin has decided to call on the men from the poorer regions in Russia first. Gulphira’s two sons also have to go to war. Life was tough already and now they also have to deal with a massive loss.

This beautiful documentary on the Nogai people in the Russian republic Dagestan, near Georgia and bordering the Caspian Sea, is a cinematographic masterpiece. The imagery of the desert-like steppe landscape is very impressive. The policy of Putin is not explicitly criticised, but you can only feel the dejection and powerlessness of the women who stay behind.
