Mateo begs Ana to drive back to the place in the forest where they left their seven-year-old son two minutes ago, but he is no longer there.

Ana is behind the wheel. Next to her is her husband, Mateo. Together, they are driving through the forest. The tension in the car is palpable. Mateo begs her to turn around, but Ana drives on. After two long minutes she finally turns around. On the spot they left their son, they only find his cap. What was meant to be a punishment, quickly turns into every parents’s nightmare.

In one single, uncut scene of almost an hour and a half, we follow Ana and Mateo while their marriage slowly crumbles. But the film is much more than this technical tour de force: ‘The Punishment’ takes hold of you with its first image and never lets you go.
