This film tells the extraordinary story of a young girl who survives the Armenian genocide, escapes to America and plays the leading part in a Hollywood film based on her own life.
Aurora Mardiganian lives a careless childhood in an Armenian community in Turkey. Peace is abruptly disrupted when the Ottoman Turks start considering the Armenians as hostile people. Aurora and her family are one of the many groups to be deported during this Armenian genocide. After a lot of hardship and wandering, Aurora can finally escape to America.
‘Aurora’s Sunrise’ is a clever mix of different genres: it is a documentary, illustrated with scarce fragments from the silent film ‘Auction of Soul’ (1919), in which the real Aurora plays the leading part. All of this is completed with beautiful animated scenes.
