A man leaves the city to find the meaning of home and tradition on the Mongolian steppe. He takes his sick mother along, with a rope around her so he can’t lose her.

Alus can’t bear that his mother, who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, is trapped in her apartment like a prisoner. He decides to take her back to the Mongolian steppe, her homeland. While her condition deteriorates, Alus tries to prevent her from getting lost by tying her to him with a rope. In the meantime, he learns everything about the traditional Mongolian approach to life and death.

‘The Cord of Life’ is a touching story with beautiful images full of colour and symbols. The film’s theme is relatable for everyone around the world. The message is hopeful, because love and dignity in dealing with dementia can be very liberating.

Mongolian is my native tongue, but I wanted to make a film with a universal theme displaying the circumstances of a place many people probably do not know.
