‘Alam’ refreshingly shows the life of Palestinian teens in Israel and adds a subtle yet critical political layer.

Palestinian Tamer and his friends attend an Israeli school and don’t care much about politics. Their main activities concern girls, cigarettes and studying the absolute minimum to pass. When the beautiful Maysaa invites him to a peaceful protest that criticises Israeli policies, he becomes more aware of his Palestinian identity.

Firas Khoury’s enthralling feature film debut is very relevant. Through nationalist mechanisms, the director depicts the daily life of young Palestinians in Israel and the existential contradictions they face.
