In ‘Beyond the Wall’, a suicidal, blind man and a fugitive, epileptic mother become physically and psychologically entangled. The film is a violent controversy against oppression by the Irani state.

Visually impaired Ali tries to commit suicide, but is saved by his janitor at the last minute. The janitor tells him that the police are looking for Leila, a fugitive. Ali finds out that she is hiding in his apartment. Slowly, he grows fond of her. Because he wants to escape reality, his help to Leila becomes a refuge in his own fantasy world.

This impressive film is almost impossible to retell. You have to see it for yourself to appreciate the ingenious construction. It is extremely well-made, but very dark and gloomy. Although ‘Beyond the Wall’ is not meant for sensitive souls, it is an absolute must-see for connoisseurs of extraordinary cinema.

The director says it himself: ‘Imagine they take the bread away from the table, and the words from a book, blossoms from the trees and the smile from our lips, / What will they do to our dreams?’
