Lesja zit een gevangenisstraf van zeven jaar uit. Als haar zoon Kolya geboren wordt, mag hij tot zijn derde verjaardag bij haar in de gevangenis blijven. Als die verjaardag nadert en er nog geen opvang voor hem is gevonden, neemt de paniek bij Lesja toe. Alleen de rol van Lesja wordt door een professionele actrice vertolkt. De andere gevangenen en de opzichters zijn letterlijk uit het leven gegrepen. Respectvol, geduldig en in een beheerste stijl met schilderachtige tableaus toont de regisseur een microkosmos achter gesloten deuren.
