De 13-jarige Stevie is een eenzaat die samenwoont met zijn aggresieve oudere broer en alleenstaande moeder in LA. Noch thuis, noch op school voelt hij zich echt geaccepteerd. Nadat hij per toeval een bende oudere skaters ontmoet bij de lokale skateshop om de hoek, wordt het voor hem duidelijk: hij wil opgenomen worden in de vriendengroep en zelf ook leren skaten. Maar dat loopt niet altijd op rolletjes. Met vallen en opstaan wordt Stevie een echte skater en groeit het respect van zijn vrienden, waar hij zo hard naar opkijkt.
