Ziné and Avdal are in love, in spite of the long-standing feud between their families. Just as the two families finally agree to put their differences aside so that their children can get married, Avdal is wounded at the front. He can no longer be sexually active, which casts a shadow over the wedding night. While family tensions flare again, Ziné and Avdal start to discover new ways to experience pleasure. Will their love survive decades of conflict?

The director depicts his country in a time of profound metamorphosis, given that the younger generations demand more freedom, democracy and equality. Girls dream of independence and boys hope they can marry someone they love. The director seems to be fascinated with the courage of women trying to break free from traditional patterns, while some young men do not recognize themselves anymore in those patterns and try to think for themselves.
