Like millions of women, Shimu Akhtar works in a garment factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The working conditions are tough and the wages are low. After a fire breaks out, she is pushed to her limit and decides that it is time to set up a union.

23-year-old Shimu Akhtar works at a garment factory in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, like millions of other women. A fire shakes up Shimu and she seeks to do something about the work conditions. By a stroke of luck, she meets Nasima Apa, a human rights activist who instigates her to unionize. Shimu faces opposition from the administration of the factory system. She also has to deal with personal threats and even her husband does not want to support her.

'Made in Bangladesh' was inspired by the story of Daliya, a union leader in a factory whom the director met. The film stays close to reality and reminds us of films by Ken Loach or the Dardenne brothers. The social reality in Made in Bangladesh is crossed with a feminist conscience in the protagonist in her struggle against her bosses, the administration and her husband. This makes the film universal, but also current.

The women’s status seems to be paradoxical in the sense that, empowerment, oppression and fight - all exist for the women.
