‘Clara Sola’ is a captivating magic realistic fairy-tale, with a fantastic interpretation by Wendy Chinchilla in the role of Clara.

In a remote hamlet in the Costa Rican countryside lives Clara, a forty-year-old woman with an intellectual disability. She also suffers from a severe deformation in her spine. She lives with her fifteen-year-old niece Maria and her fanatically religious mother. Clara is said to have miraculous healing powers and in their home a chapel is set up for neighbours to worship her. Unfortunately, she cannot apply those magical powers to herself and her ever so pious mother refuses to let her have a surgery which could alleviate her back pain. ‘God has put her on the world like this, this is how she will die’, she says heartlessly.

But Santiago, her precociousniece’s fiancé, awakens surprising feelings, making her enter unknown territory and taking the road to liberation. In the film, Clara seems tomerge with nature, the green and voracious jungle, with its little inhabitants–insects, butterflies and bugs. And she always finds comfort with her favourite animal: a white horse.
